There is no typical day in the life of a physio. Sometimes we are called musculoskeletal therapists which means that any problem you might have with your bones, joints, muscles, nerves, tendons, ligaments or even your connective tissue, falls under our remit.

In any given day we might,

  • provide hands on treatment and advice for your back or neck pain
  • help you get back to normal life after a joint replacement
  • teach you about posture
  • run a Pilates class
  • advise on your running technique
  • help you improve shoulder range after a fracture
  • teach pelvic floor exercises
  • help you understand and manage your chronic pain

These are just a few examples of what we do and we may address more than one issue at a time. Thankfully it is now widely accepted that parts of your body don’t function in isolation. Your back pain, for example may be related to an old knee injury, how you sit at work. It might be worse this month because you’ve been under huge emotional stress at home. Physios are great listeners and flexible thinkers. Our intention is to use whatever approach best suits you to get you fully fit and functional, even better than you thought you could be.

We recognise ourselves as part of the jigsaw that makes you truly well and at Courtyard we have ready access to other health professionals either within our clinics, or in the wider community. We might for example discuss pain relief with your GP, or a rehabilitation programme with your hip consultant or sports coach. We might refer you to our sports massage therapist for soft tissue work or a podiatrist to look at your foot biomechanics. If you need support with exercises at home, we’ll show your family members or a friend how to help you.

Having so many rehabilitation tools available to us makes physio a hugely fulfilling job. According to Carol Welch “Movement is a medicine for creating change in a person’s physical, emotional and mental states” and I think this sums our work up perfectly.
